Pastor Lee’s Lines …..

An American was shipwrecked and stranded on a Pacific Island for many years.  Finally, a boat comes sailing into view, and the man frantically waves and draws the skipper’s attention.  When his boat finally gets to the island, the sailor gets out to greet the stranded man.  After a while, the sailor asks, ”What are these three huts you have made?”  The man answers, “That one is my house, and I built that hut as my church.”  The sailor said, “What about the other hut?” “Oh, that’s where I used to go to church.”

Why is it that so many Christians in America either change churches or else stop going altogether?  That’s an easy one.  Churches are imperfect and full of sinners.  In fact, the church is the only organization in the world in which membership is based on the candidate admitting that they are sinners in need of salvation.  Did you know that the church is the only organization on earth where genuine and lasting forgiveness and reconciliation takes place? So that is one good reason to go to church.

Here is another reason to go to church.  It has been proven that attending church lengthens your life.  Several secular scientific studies have concluded that regular attendance at religious services improves your health.  It is good for your body.  People who attend church at least once a week have healthier immune systems, have lower blood pressure, and are less vulnerable to disease.  One study at Duke University completed recently proves that of 4,000 North Carolinians over the age of 64, the death rate for church attenders was 28% less than non-attenders.  A similar study of people aged 21-65 in California had the same findings.  So, you want to live longer? Go to church every week.

But the most important reason to go to church is because God says that He wants us to worship Him in a group.  Look up Hebrews Chapter 10.  Hebrews 10:22-25 have been called God’s lettuce garden because four times it says, “Let us.”  “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith.”

Here is a suggestion.  When you park your car and are walking into church, find your seat and say something like this: I am now coming into the presence of God to worship the Holy God who made me and loves me.  I want to be with you God.  Fill me with your spirit.  Cleanse me of any sin that might get in the way of me worshiping you with my whole heart.  Help me to put aside any distractions.  Quiet my soul.  Help me to be fully present here.  Use this service to make me more like You.

The church is not a physical building.  The church is not a sociological organization.  The church is not an academic classroom.  It is not just a place to hatch, patch, match, and dispatch.  Rather, the church is people, connected together in community to seek the lost, strengthen the saints, worship the Savior, preach the Bible, and serve the world.  There is nothing else like it in the universe.  Nothing else can touch and shape and change and impact so many lives like the church.  See you in church Sunday!

Blessings always,

Pastor Lee
